Quick answer

Migrating an Access database means moving your tables to a real database engine, most often SQL Server, on-premises or in the cloud. You then either keep your Access forms as a lightweight front end, or rebuild them on a new platform such as Power Apps, Dataverse or a custom web app. The right path depends on your number of users, your budget and how much of your VBA logic the business depends on.

Choose your migration path

Ten Ways to Move On from Access, and When Each One Fits

There is no single correct destination. Below is the honest trade-off for each path, explained the way we would in a scoping call.

01

Access → SQL Server

Migrate Access Database to SQL Server

Your tables move to a SQL Server back end, while your Access forms and reports keep running as a linked front end. It is the fastest, lowest-risk first step off a struggling database.

Microsoft's free migration tools move tables, relationships and indexes, and your forms and most VBA keep working against the linked data. Corruption, size limits and locking problems go away without a full rebuild, and you can retire the Access front end later or keep it.

Access to SQL Server Migration →
At a glance: Best for: fast relief from corruption, size limits or locking | Multi-user: yes | Rebuild effort: low to moderate | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • Resolves corruption, size limits and locking
  • Free official tooling handles schema and data
  • Works on-premises or as a step towards the cloud
  • Access front end can be phased out later
02

Access → Azure SQL / Cloud

Migrate Access Database to Azure SQL and the Cloud

Azure SQL follows the same path as SQL Server, but the database lives in the cloud, giving remote and multi-site teams one live database without VPNs or in-house servers.

Schema and query logic transfer directly. What changes is operations: automatic backups, patching and the ability to scale up or down without buying hardware.

Access to Azure SQL Migration →
At a glance: Best for: remote or multi-site teams | Multi-user: yes | Rebuild effort: low to moderate | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • No server hardware to buy or maintain
  • Automated, redundant backups
  • Scales as your data grows
  • Same approach as SQL Server, hosted
03

Access → AWS / Amazon RDS

Migrate Access Database to Amazon RDS (AWS)

Amazon RDS hosts SQL Server, MySQL or PostgreSQL for you, which suits organisations that already run on AWS rather than Azure.

RDS is a managed service, not a new engine. You still choose the database underneath, and the same migration tools apply. AWS handles patching, backups and failover.

Access to Amazon RDS Migration →
At a glance: Best for: organisations standardised on AWS | Multi-user: yes | Rebuild effort: low to moderate | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • Managed backups, patching and failover
  • Choice of SQL Server, MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Fits existing AWS accounts and security rules
  • Same migration approach as other SQL Server targets
04

Access → .NET / Web App

Convert Access Database to a .NET or Custom Web Application

This is a full rebuild. Your tables move to a professional database, and your forms, reports and VBA logic are rewritten as application code, with no Access licence needed for users.

No automatic converter exists, because Access forms and VBA have no mechanical web equivalent. It is genuine software development: data layer, business logic, interface, testing. It is the highest-effort option and the one with the highest ceiling.

Access to Web Application Conversion →
At a glance: Best for: Access that has become a core business system | Multi-user: yes | Rebuild effort: high | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • No Access licence or runtime for users
  • Full control over interface, security and integrations
  • Scales to any number of users
  • Highest effort, right for business-critical systems
05

Access → Power Apps

Migrate Access Database to Power Apps

Power Apps replaces Access screens with modern, browser-based forms, usually on a Dataverse or SQL Server back end.

It is the closest like-for-like upgrade to Access's biggest weakness, its dated desktop interface. Heavily customised VBA may need Power Automate flows alongside it.

Access to Power Apps Migration →
At a glance: Best for: replacing the Access interface without a full code rebuild | Multi-user: yes | Rebuild effort: moderate | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • Modern, mobile-friendly forms
  • Runs on Dataverse, SQL Server or SharePoint
  • Fast route to a web app for internal tools
  • Complex VBA may need extra flows
06

Access → Dataverse

Migrate Access Database to Microsoft Dataverse

Dataverse is the managed data platform behind Power Apps, offering a governed, secure, multi-user database with roles and an audit trail built in.

Your tables are remapped into Dataverse's own model, which is a genuine design exercise. In return you get enterprise-grade security and integration with Microsoft 365. Licensing should be budgeted early.

Access to Dataverse Migration →
At a glance: Best for: Microsoft 365 teams wanting a governed platform | Multi-user: yes | Rebuild effort: moderate to high | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • True multi-user cloud database
  • Built-in security roles and audit trail
  • Integrates with Power Automate, Teams and Outlook
  • Needs Power Apps / Dataverse licensing
07

Access → MySQL

Migrate Access Database to MySQL

MySQL can be reached through ODBC connectors, but Access-specific features do not map one-to-one, so a data-type and query audit comes first.

Attachment fields, OLE objects and multi-value lookups need a deliberate replacement strategy, and Access SQL and VBA are rewritten in standard SQL. MySQL is common when Access is replaced by a PHP or other open-source web stack.

Access to MySQL Migration →
At a glance: Best for: web rebuilds on open-source stacks | Multi-user: yes | Rebuild effort: moderate | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • Open-source, no per-user licensing
  • Strong fit for PHP and open-source stacks
  • Needs a data-type audit
  • VBA logic is rebuilt in the application layer
08

Access → PostgreSQL

Migrate Access Database to PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL follows a similar path, but its stricter data rules tend to expose years of accumulated data-quality problems during the move.

That is inconvenient at first and valuable afterwards: mismatched dates, orphaned records and inconsistent text get fixed once instead of carried forward. It suits complex reporting and heavier queries.

Access to PostgreSQL Migration →
At a glance: Best for: data integrity and complex reporting | Multi-user: yes | Rebuild effort: moderate | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • Excellent data integrity
  • Open-source with strong query support
  • Migration reveals old data problems
  • Pairs well with custom front ends
09

Access → SharePoint

Migrate Access Database to SharePoint

Microsoft retired Access web apps in 2018, so moving to SharePoint now means linking Access to SharePoint lists, or moving the whole application to Power Apps and Dataverse.

SharePoint lists work as a simple backend for small, low-complexity apps, but they have row-count and throttling limits. For anything larger, Power Apps on Dataverse is the supported path.

At a glance: Best for: simple shared lists, or a step towards Power Apps | Multi-user: limited | Rebuild effort: low to moderate | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • Access web apps no longer exist
  • Lists suit small, low-volume data
  • Dataverse with Power Apps is the modern successor
  • We tell you honestly which fits
10

Access → LibreOffice Base

Migrate Access Database to LibreOffice Base

LibreOffice Base is a free alternative that can import your tables, a genuine option if licensing cost is the real problem.

Queries, forms and macros do not come across automatically, and macros must be rewritten because Base does not use VBA. It suits modest, well-understood databases rather than ones where VBA does heavy lifting.

At a glance: Best for: removing licensing costs on a modest database | Multi-user: limited | Rebuild effort: moderate | Timeline: agreed after audit
  • Free and open-source
  • Runs on Windows, macOS and Linux
  • Import wizard brings over tables and data
  • Forms, reports and macros are rebuilt

Frequently asked questions

Access Migration Questions, Answered Plainly

Common questions about moving, upgrading and replacing Microsoft Access databases.

What is the best way to migrate an Access database to SQL Server?
For most databases, Microsoft's free migration assistant or the built-in upsizing wizard is the right start. It moves tables, relationships and indexes, while your forms and reports keep running against linked tables.
How much does it cost to migrate an Access database?
Cost follows effort. A back-end-only move costs least, because your forms and reports keep working, while a full web rebuild costs most. Table count, report complexity and VBA all affect the price, so we quote after a short audit.
Can I convert an Access database into a web application?
Yes, but it is a rebuild, not an automatic conversion. Your data moves to SQL Server or PostgreSQL, and the forms, reports and logic are recreated as web code.
How do I migrate Access to MySQL or PostgreSQL?
Both use ODBC drivers to link or export tables. Plan a data-type audit first, since Attachments, OLE objects and multi-value fields do not map directly and AutoNumber needs a replacement.
Can I migrate an Access database to AWS instead of Azure?
Yes. Amazon RDS runs the same engines, and the same tools migrate into it. It is the right choice when your infrastructure and security are already built around AWS.
Can I convert an Access database to a PHP web application?
Yes. Tables move to MySQL or PostgreSQL, and the forms, reports and VBA logic are rebuilt as PHP code. No automatic converter exists for this.
What is SSMA?
SSMA is Microsoft's free SQL Server Migration Assistant. It automates schema and data migration into SQL Server, Azure SQL or RDS, but it does not handle forms, reports or VBA.
Can Access still connect to SharePoint?
Access can link to SharePoint lists as a simple backend for low-volume data. Microsoft retired Access web apps in 2018, so larger needs belong on Power Apps and Dataverse.
How do I convert an MDB file to ACCDB?
Open the file in a current Access version and use Save As to the ACCDB format. This only updates the file format and does not fix performance, size or multi-user limits.
Can I export an Access database to PDF?
Yes. Use the export option on any report or table. VBA can also automate exports on a schedule. A PDF is a static document, not a live database.
Can I migrate an Access database to LibreOffice Base?
Yes, through its import wizard. Expect to rebuild forms, reports and automation, since Base uses its own macro language instead of VBA.
Will my forms, reports and VBA keep working after migration?
It depends on the path. A back-end-only migration usually lets existing forms and reports keep working. A different platform means rebuilding them and porting the VBA logic.
What happens to my Access queries?
Most become views or stored procedures. Simple queries convert with minor changes, while those using Access-specific functions or VBA-built SQL are rewritten by hand.
Do I need to migrate my entire Access database at once?
No. Many organisations move the data first, keep the Access front end for a while, and replace it later or never.
What is the difference between Azure SQL and Amazon RDS?
Very little if SQL Server is the engine on both. The real decision is which cloud your organisation already uses.
How long does a migration take, and what does it cost?
It depends on table count, form and report complexity and the amount of VBA. We scope time and cost after a short audit rather than quoting blind.
